Front Panel Overlay (Graphic Overlay)

Importance of the Membrane Switch Graphic Panel Overlay

label construction diagram

Diagram of a membrane switch graphic overlay

The front panel or graphic overlay contains all the text and graphics of the user interface that provide meaningful information and feedback to the user.

The impact of the user graphic interface directly effects their experience of the electronic device. It should reflect the reliability and quality of the technology and last the duration of the product's life. Information on the graphic panel should be clear and concise, assisting the user in operation of the device.

Front Panel Overlay Printing Considerations

The graphic panel is generally reverse printed (printed on the back of the material) for increased durability and abrasion resistance. Silk screen and digital printing are the primary printing methods employed allowing for maximum brilliance, density and aesthetic appeal.

Materials and Construction of Membrane Switch Graphic Overlays

The front panel overlay of a membrane switch is generally constructed of a durable polyester or polycarbonate material. Textures and varnishes may be applied for enhanced tactile and visual appeal as well as embossing and polydoming.

The membrane switch overlay may also be constructed from a molded silicone or elastomer giving the panel a soft touch that is appealing for consumer electronics and hand-held devices. Elastomer and silicone overlays have the added benefit of impact and shock resistance. While elastomer and silicone panels are less durable than polyester and polycarbonate overlays, the contacts (conductive pills) are molded into elastomer and silicone panels making the contacts wear and damage resistant.
