Tactile Membrane Layer

Diagram of a tactile membrane switch membrane layer
Tactile membrane switches often require a thin flexible layer over the actuators. This layer is generally made from polyester and is die cut at each switch.
The switch openings of the tactile membrane layer are usually die cut a few thousands of an inch smaller than the height of the dome actuator to allow a small preload on the dome which facilitates a tactile feel. This layer also holds the actuator in place, resulting in greater durability and stability.
Depending on the switch application, this layer will also include venting for the domes to allow trapped air to escape during actuation. |
