Pressure Sensitive Label Over-laminates and Varnishes

Over-laminates and Varnishes are optional elements that can be used to make the surface of the label more printable, enhance the appearance of the label or add a protective layer.

Printability

Specialty coatings may be applied to the label or a portion of the label to make it receptive to a wide variety of printing methods by the end user:

Laser printable
Bubble / Ink jet printable
Thermal ribbon printable
Direct thermal printable
Pen / marker printable

Protection

Over-laminates and specialty coatings may be applied to the label to add a protective layer. These treatments provide enhanced durability and resistance to a variety of environmental exposures:

Moisture resistance
Chemical resistance
Sun (UV radiation) resistance
Abrasion resistance
Scratch resistance

Appearance

Specialty coatings may be applied to the entire surface or to specific areas to enhance the appearance of the label by adding surface variations and texture:

Anti-glare surface treatment
Read-out window visibility enhancement
Tactile enhancement
Decorative elements
Gloss finishes
matte texture

Common Types of Label Over-laminates and Varnishes

Water-based Varnish	Providing minimal protection, water based varnishes are generally used for anti-glare treatment, low-impact protection and artistic enhancements. They are not suitable for heavy-usage areas or where abrasion resistance is required. Water based varnishes are applied as an ink and therefore may cover all or part of the label surface. Available in clear and matte clear.
UV Varnish	Providing a moderate protection, UV varnishes are appropriate for impact and touch resistance but are not appropriate for abrasion resistance. UV varnishes are applied as an ink and therefore may cover all or part of the label surface. After application, UV varnishes must be cured, giving them enhanced durability over water based varnishes. Available in clear and matte clear.
Over-laminate	Providing maximum protection, over-laminates are suitable for high-impact and abrasion resistance. An over-laminate provides a material barrier above the printed surface of the label and may be applied with flaps over portions of the label, allowing the end user to add information to the label and subsequently apply the remainder of the over-laminate. Available in clear and matte clear.
