Pressure Sensitive Label Release Liners

The release liner (also called backing) is a material that acts as a carrier for the label. The liner protects the adhesive layer and stays with the label until it is ready to be applied to a surface. Most label material is manufactured with a standard liner. If a special liner is required, it must be custom laminated.

A release coating is applied to the liner material which allows the liner to separate from the labels adhesive layer. The release coating is typically silicone but will vary according to the label adhesive and end use environment. Silicone-free liners are available for applications where silicone can not be present, typically cleanroom environments.

Types of Label Liners

Paper
  • Used when particulation is not an issue
  • Typically silicone coated for easy label removal
  • Generally manufactured from kraft paper
  • Available bleached or unbleached and coated or uncoated
Synthetic
  • Available as silicone free, standard (clear), safety (colored) and ESD
  • Used primarily in cleanroom environment
  • Available in polyester, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyethylene and polyolefin
  • Do not work well with permanent adhesives
  • Available with textured surface for anti-static applications
Both paper and synthetic liners are available in different thicknesses. A thicker liner is used for sheet and fan-folded labels to help them lay flat. Some high speed applicators require a stronger liner to run properly.

Label Liner Options

Back Score The liner is slit from the back side allowing for easy removal from the label. Back scoring is generally applied to labels supplied by the piece.
Butt Cut Labels Butt cut labels do not have any gap between labels. They can run edge to edge on the liner.
Pin-feed Labels Pin-feed labels are supplied on a roll that has tractor feed holes in the liner along the left and right edge. There is generally a perforation between labels so that each individual label, along with its carrier, can be removed.
