Tactivex™ is a bacteria inhibiting film that may be applied as a protective skin to high-touch surfaces or integrated with products to reduce the survival and spread of bacteria.
Aimed squarely at the challenges associated with microbial contamination, the surface layer of Tactivex features the Sharklet™ technology that inhibits bacterial survival and transfer through a surface micro-pattern without the use of antimicrobials, chemicals or disinfectants. By creating an engineered topography, Sharklet’s patented surface technology mimics a pattern occurring in nature that is inherently unfriendly for the growth and survival of microorganisms. Laboratory tests have proven that the Sharklet micro-pattern disrupts several critical microbial colonizing processes that are necessary for bacteria to develop into a disease-causing biofilm.
- No risk for antimicrobial resistance
- Provides defense against multiple strains of bacteria
- Keeps surfaces cleaner between cleanings
- Provides for improved hygiene and cost control
- Inhibits bacteria growth and transference regardless of human compliance to cleanliness procedures
- Maintains the cleanliness of sensitive equipment that may not be able to be cleaned with frequency
- Establish identifiable “safe zones” on surfaces for human touch
Tactivex Product Applications
- PROTECTIVE MATS : Tactivex mats are an ideal format for featuring advertising or educational content while reducing the growth and transfer of bacteria. Applications may include:
- Countertop mats at cashier stations and reception areas
- Mats designed for use with specific carts, workstations, trays and tables
- Mats for work spaces, such as desk covers, computer stations, nurses stations, laboratory work areas, refreshment/beverage stations
- SURFACE SKINS: Utilizing Tactivex as a surface skin enables protection of a broad range of surfaces. Tactivex skins come with a pressure sensitive adhesive provided in varying degrees of removability. Skins are pre-cut to the desired size and shape and can be provided as semi-transparent or printed in custom colors and graphics. Applications may include:
- Patient Room Kits for covering high-touch surfaces near patient
- Skins for benches and counters in locker rooms and fitness centers
- Skins for high touch surfaces in public spaces, such as handrails, phones, counters, and door panels as well as restroom surfaces, such as door panels, towel dispensers, counters, and trash bins
- DIRECT PRODUCT INTEGRATION : By incorporating Tactivex as a surface in the product design, OEMs have the ability to provide a product with built in bacterial inhibition. Since Tactivex can be applied as a film with an adhesive; the product can be applied as a primary surface during the assembly of products as well as utilized as a top layer for product labeling.

The Sharklet Technology
Sharklet is a patented surface technology comprised of millions of raised, microscopic features arranged in distinct diamond shapes to form a continuous pattern. Each Sharklet diamond measures about 26 microns across and nearly three microns in feature height. Laboratory tests show that the Sharklet micro-pattern disrupts several critical microbial colonizing processes that are necessary for bacteria to develop into a disease-causing biofilm. In tests simulating an ambient hospital environment, the Sharklet patterned surface has shown to significantly reduce survival and touch transference of bacteria. Sharklet offers benefits including:
- No risk for antimicrobial resistance. It is the shape and pattern of the surface alone that disrupts bacteria’s ability to survive, not antimicrobial agents or toxicity that contribute to the development of “superbugs.
- Defense against multiple strains of bacteria. Sharklet has been tested against many Gram-negative and Gram-positive strains, including clinical isolates, in different media and flow conditions (e.g. Staph a., MRSA, VRE, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and E. coli).
- Keeps surfaces cleaner between cleanings. The Sharklet pattern is always at work and serves as a safety net when hand washing and cleaning protocols fail.
- Ability to improve hygiene and control costs. In the healthcare sector, hospital –acquired infections (HAI) account for $30.5 billion in excess healthcare costs each year. The cost of these infections is estimated between $8,000 and $15,000 per patient. Sharklet may help reduce risk of exposure to disease-causing bacteria.
Tactivex Reduces Touch Transference of Bacteria
Laboratory testing with multiple bacterial species has demonstrated that the Sharklet pattern reduces the amount of bacteria transferred onto hands by touch.
Top Row – Surfaces after exposure to Staph aureus for 30 minutes; Sharklet pattern significantly reduces the amount of bacteria on surface.
Bottom Row – Surfaces after touch by gloved hands; Sharklet pattern significantly reduces the amount of bacteria transferred to hands by touch.
